How to train your dragon review.
I know I should blog more, but I often struggle with what to post. But I do frequent the local theater quite a bit, so I figure I could give my reviews on these particular films that I watch.
So let’s begin with Dreamworks latest offering, “How to train your dragon“. Dreamworks has always been second fiddle next to Pixar when it comes to the computer animation department, and deservedly so. Pixar hits the mark on nearly every film they produce (with Cars and A Bugs Life being my least favorite). While Dreamworks, not so much.
Dreamworks has had their hits, but they just haven’t resonated with me like some of Pixars movies have.
I can safely say, that has all changed with HTTYD. Everything just came together for me.
The story, the voice acting, the animation, the characters and even the 3D (which I’m beginning to grow tired of) worked in some scenes. Nothing against that crappy Jake Sully trying to capture and ride his bird/dragon thingy scene in Avatar. But HTTYD does it so much better.
When Hiccup (our protagonist) meets Toothless the dragon, you know that he is going to soar through the skies eventually, but the way that their relationship progresses to get to that point is where we are drawn in emotionally. I really loved Toothless, and thought he was really well designed. And towards the end of the film was saying to myself, “okay, you can kill off any number of humans you want, but if that dragon dies, I am going to be an emotional wreck”.
I won’t tell you if I was an emotional wreck leaving the theater or not, you”ll just have to see it for yourself. In the end the movie moves along at a nice brisk pace and is filled with plenty of action, charm and whimsy so you are never left feeling bored. Overall me and my wife really enjoyed it and I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, for every great film like HTTYD that Dreamworks puts out, they are going to push out 3 more unnecessary sequels to lesser films like Madagascar and Shrek.
Oh well, beggars can’t be choosers.
